A charming industrial town with a famous overhead railway

Located in North-Rhine Westphalia, Wuppertal is most famous for the Schwebebahn - a suspension monorail which runs around the city center. The hanging cars provide a unique way to get around, and are a beloved part of the urban scene. The city is also famous as the birthplace of Aspirin, created by Bayer in 1897.

Studying and Working in Wuppertal

Wuppertal has long been a city where technical and scientific education takes center stage. That's certainly the case at the University of Wuppertal (UW), which has a well-regarded physics department, and has been at the forefront of supercomputing in German higher education.

The university has strong international links, both through the European Erasmus scheme, and partner universities around the world. German language skills tend to be required for applicants, but assistance is available.

Aside from the UW, Wuppertal hosts a branch of the FOM University of Applied Sciences (based in Essen), which is a major business and economics university. The Cologne University of Music also runs a conservatory in the city, linking with the world-famous Wuppertal Dance Theater.
