A global center for classical music performances

Bayreuth is a small Bavarian city, with a big reputation. One man is mainly responsible for that: Richard Wagner. The composer of the Ring Cycle lived and worked in Bayreuth, and the city hosts an annual Wagner Festival which draws enormous crowds. But it has older attractions as well, including a beautiful Baroque core, and royal palaces aplenty.

A city of 75,000 in Bavaria, Bayreuth has a single university, with around 14,000 students. It is part of Bavaria's high-tech economy, with a thriving industrial sector. However, culture takes center stage in Bayreuth, and the major attraction is the Wagner Festspielhaus, which sits on a hillside above the city.

Studying and Working in Bayreuth

The University of Bayreuth specializes in research-based degrees, with a focus on delivering unorthodox, interdisciplinary courses. For instance, students can combine biology with health economics, or theater with media studies. Strengths include the botany department (with an excellent botanical garden), as well as languages, mathematics, and economics.

Students from outside Germany are welcome to attend Uni-Bayreuth. In fact, 25% of research students come from abroad, and over 100 countries are represented. This reflects the university's aim to pursue "thinking without borders", and ensures that the atmosphere is cosmopolitan and friendly. Job prospects are good, as well, thanks to Career Days, and winter Career Forums - all involving local companies from a diverse range of sectors.
