What’s New? The 3-Step Online Visa Process
Instead of multiple embassy visits and endless paperwork, you can now complete most of your visa application online through the German government's new Consular Services Portal.
Here’s how it works:
1. Apply Online
- Fill out your visa application form on the Consular Services Portal. The new system also includes a to help you figure out the right visa type for your situation.
- Upload all required documents, like passport scans, proof of qualifications, and financial proof (such as a Blocked Account).
2. Digital Review
- German authorities will check your application online.
- If any documents are missing, they’ll request them via the portal—no need to visit the embassy just for this!
3. In-Person Verification
- Once your application is pre-approved, you’ll schedule an appointment at your nearest German embassy or consulate.
- This is for identity verification, document checks, and biometric data (fingerprints and photos).

This new update does not affect the type of documents required for a successful application. If you're a student, job-seeker, or need any long-term visa for Germany, you'll more than likely still need a Blocked Account to prove you can support yourself in Germany. The good news? No, if you've already applied for a German visa using the old process, there's no need to cancel your application.
The new Consular Services Portal, which launched on January 1, 2025, is designed to streamline future applications, but this does not impact already submitted applications.
Once my documents are verified in the portal how do I book an appointment?
Once your documents are verified in the you need to book an in-person appointment at the nearest German embassy, mission, or consulate.
To do this, log back into the portal, where you’ll see available dates and times based on your location.
At the appointment, officials will check your original documents, verify your identity, and collect biometric data like fingerprints and a photo.
We recommend scheduling your appointment as soon as possible, as slots may fill up quickly. You can also track your application status in the portal to stay updated on any next steps.

Your actual visa appointment is still in person.
Although you submit your initial application and documents online, an in-person appointment at a German embassy, mission, or consulate is still required. This is for security and authentication reasons. You will be able to schedule this in person appointment after your online application has been reviewed by officials.
