Germany is world famous for its excellent technical degrees, especially in the area of engineering. With a choice of 240 universities of Applied Sciences, offering bachelor's and master's degrees with no tuition fees and even some courses in English, it’s little wonder that international students choose Berlin, Munich and Stuttgart over institutions in their home country.

We will help you explore the possibility of studying Engineering Science in Germany while discussing some of the best technical universities in Germany.

The Federal Republic of Germany offers a large number of courses in engineering. Every year, a large number of students graduate with an engineering degree from one of the country's universities. Students can choose from a wide range of specializations, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or environmental engineering.

Study Engineering Science in Germany

Engineering Science is a broad study area that incorporates all the sciences as well as mathematics and sometimes even humanities or social sciences, with engineering.

The vast majority of engineering degrees are taught in German, although you may find some which are English-taught.

An engineering degree from Germany is recognized worldwide by recruiters, plus international students can study for engineering degrees in Germany for free, as there are no tuition fees. This means that international students have the opportunity to gain a world-class education without incurring any debt.

There are many reasons why you should study engineering in Germany. Not only will you benefit from excellent teaching and world-class facilities, but you'll also have the chance to experience German culture and meet people from all over the world.

Bachelor’s degree programs in engineering take six to seven semesters (3-3.5 years) to complete and Master’s degree programs generally last four semesters (2 years), with some programs requiring the fifth semester for a thesis.

Find out more about these types of degree programs on our Bachelor's and Master’s Degree in Germany pages.

See our recommended list of engineering universities in Germany for international students below, where we explore the top five institutions for studying engineering.

Language requirements

If the course you want to apply for is German-taught you will need to prove you have a sufficient level of German, or undertake a German language course first. These are sometimes offered by the university you wish to attend. If the degree you want to study is taught in English, then you will not need to take a German language test. Although, some universities may require proof of your level of English, such as an IELTS or TOEFL score.
